Theremin

Even the Theremin is a military invention. Mumford said music came from the leisure of the military class. This one is from a Cold War. An age of espionage.

Saw one of these in use for the first time last week. Lights off. Hands manipulating radio waves. Music of the ether.

A few days later, I attended a Christmas service. It had an orchestra accompaniment and a choir. Lights were turned low. A good view of the conductor. It struck me how simliar in gestures, in atmosphere, these two experiences were. United, it appeared in the calling forth of corals from some deep.
