OccupyData Yackathon

This Sunday at The New School’s Wollman Hall, 65 W 11th from 12-5pm. The event will be rather casual, so feel free to drop by and leave at any time.

Hackathons are everywhere. They’re hosted by companies, governments, and community groups, and they attract talented people with diverse skill sets to work together on project for slices of pizza (and sometimes a stab at a lucrative prize). If you’ve ever been to one, you know they can be exciting, production-oriented environments to solve problems.

This “yackathon” is a chance to critically examine the ideas, outcomes, and problems of hackathons. What are the politics and the potential of the now-ubiquitous hackathon? Can it effectively support political action and civic engagement? What other methods of self-organized research and development can we learn from? We’ll also reflect, share, and collaborate on the work we’ve each done in the past.
