Seek first the user, and all else will follow – the Gospel of Google 6:33

August 21st, 2007

Just saw this on a Linkedin job posting:

“Focus on the user, and all else will follow”. That’s one of the key philosophies behind everything that Google does, and we’re are looking for Interaction Designers to help drive the design process for new Google products and features. – LinkedIn: Google: Interaction Designer – Seattle at Google

Sounds a little like

… seek ye first the kingdom of God … and all these things shall be added unto you. – Matt 6:33

What’s the difference between the user and the kingdom? Both are somewhat amorphous and hard to objectify. However the user is an individual defined in relation to a tool, so perhaps they can be objectified in as much as the tool can be defined. A kingdom, on the other hand, does not have the set relationship of person to tool. It implies a relationship between a king and his vassals, but also the vassals between each other. ‘Seek the kingdom‘ is tantamount to saying ’seek right relations’, where right would may be vetted by the monarch.
